Go Take a Hike!

Jeff took the kids hiking last week while I ran errands and had some down-time. It was a beautiful day, so they packed a lunch and headed out to a local wilderness area. During the hike, they encountered everything from squirrels and jumping spiders to poppies and poison oak (from which they kept a safe distance), and Jeff used the opportunity to teach Vika and Eamon a little about the environment.

Between discussion of plants, animals and rocks, Jeff discovered that Eamon is quite a climber. At one point he scaled the face of a 40-foot boulder, the backside of which was easily a 50-foot drop. Upon reaching the peak, Eamon calmly sat down, taking in the view ahead of him, and oblivious to any danger of falling. Naturally, Jeff stayed very close by, so that should Eamon slip, he would be able to catch him. Even still, if I had been there, I would have probably panicked – Eamon is not the most coordinated and can trip over a speck of dust. How he was able to nimbly climb a steep boulder without incident is beyond me!

In spite of the discovery that we have a little daredevil in the family, Jeff, Vika, and Eamon had a great time climbing and exploring.
