Eamon's Boo-thday Party
I know, corny title, but that is how one little boy at Eamon's party pronounced "birthday", and it just seemed fitting.
Eamon had a wonderful birthday, and his party was a HUGE success. We celebrated his actual birthday on Saturday, just the four of us. We had Boston Cream Pie for breakfast (which Eamon and Vika inhaled), then opened gifts. The big gift this year was a bike. Vika has a pink Schwinn that she tools around on, but Eamon didn't have his own bike. He kept asking for a yellow one, which we found at Toys 'R Us, and wrapped with a sheet and big bow. He LOVED it, and after eating a healthy brunch (you can't just go on Boston Cream Pie, after all), the kids spent a good amount of time riding around outside.
On Sunday, we had Eamon's birthday party. The day began with a visit to the pumpkin patch, something Vika and Eamon had never seen before. They had a blast climbing the haystack pyramid, sorting through all the pumpkins and walking in the hay maze. Their Dedushka Ed had given them each a kid's hardware store apron, which they wore all around the pumpkin patch, looking like little farm workers. We piled the car high with pumpkins gourds and various squashes, and then headed to mom's house for the party.
Now, for those of you who have or are planning on having boys, let me just say that a boy's birthday party is way different than a girl's. Opening gifts was INSANE! At Vika's party, everyone watched from a respectful distance, and she was able to take as much time with a gift as she wanted. Not so at Eamon's party. The raucous swarm of boys surrounding him kept diving in to touch every new car, truck, or motorcycle he opened. Extreme vehicles were definitely the name of the game as far as gifts were concerned. Jeff had to create a protective barrier around Eamon to give him space to open gifts as well as enable the rest of us to take pictures! It was quite the scene, and my friend Gretchen, who has a little girl, just stared at it in slack-jawed amazement.
All in all, everyone had a great time at Eamon's party. Vika had a few sad feelings on Eamon's birthday, when it was just the four of us, but we worked through them with her, and by the time of Eamon's party, she was doing fine. The fact that she was the big apple bobbing hero of the day didn't hurt matters either. :)

We had a pumpkin decorating station, which was
a lot of fun for the kids, but the highlight of the day was bobbing for apples. Eamon was the first to go, and he dove in a couple of times, but could not get an apple. Finally we just let him grab one with his hand. The next few kids also experienced difficulty, and all wound up taking their apple out with their hands. Then it was Vika’s turn. She climbed up to the cauldron, as cool as you please, dove in and pulled out an apple in her teeth, first try! Her whole face and the front of her hair was dripping wet, and the crowd erupted into cheers! She sat there, just grinning and taking it all in. I tell you, I was so proud of her at the moment! No whining or complaining about getting wet from my little girl! She just dove right in full force, and came out with the prize! Well, needless to say, after that the bar was set pretty high. Some of the older kids did pretty well, but none was able to capture Vika's glory.
