Happy New Year!

To celebrate New Year’s Eve, Jeff and I decided a change of scenery was in order. We packed up the car full of food, water, warm clothes and fishing gear, and made a trek out to the beach. We went to the beach last year on New Year’s Day, so I think going this year officially makes it a tradition.

For those of you not familiar with Northern California, let me tell you that the beaches here are much different than those in Southern California. The sun did not make an appearance all day. There was just a haze of fog that had settled over the area. The sand was not golden or white, but a rich, dark color made up of millions of tiny pebbles. Wearing a bathing suit was simply out of the question. Unless it remained hidden under layers of fleece. It was a cold day, but beautiful too.

As we were preparing to leave for the beach, Jeff grabbed a spare set of clothes for everyone. I asked him why this was necessary and he said, “You never know. Eamon might fall into the water, and you might have to jump in and save him.” My response to this explanation was, “Dude. Please.” But, I decided to humor him and packed the extra clothes into the car.

Can you guess what happened 2 hours before we left the beach this afternoon?

Eamon fell into the water and I had to jump in and rescue him. Really. Luckily, it was only about 6 inches of water on the shore, but the waves were rushing in and receding so fast that he was terrified! As I carried his soaking body back to our blanket, Eamon told me he was so glad I had saved him from the sharks that wanted to eat him. Poor kid though he was going to be some fish’s lunch!

Needless to say, we used the spare pair of clothes. I ran to the car to retrieve them while Eamon sat shivering, wrapped up in a blanket and looking like a blue burrito.

Other than the surprise sea bathing incident, the day was very nice. Jeff caught two fish on the surf, despite some bait pillaging by a bold sea gull, and we cooked them up for dinner. I’ve never seen Vika as excited as she was when Jeff reeled in that second fish! She was bragging to everyone on the beach who stopped by to look.

Vika and Eamon also had fun exploring the beach, rock climbing, and playing on a makeshift driftwood seesaw. It may have been a cold, gray day, but it was a wonderful New Year’s Eve.

Happy New Year everyone! I wish you all the best, and hope those of you waiting for your children are able to welcome them home in 2007.

Ha! Last night we were talking about those weird happenings. I was talking about an old high school friend of mine and telling a story that happened to him relating to the topic we were talking about. Well an hour later that very same friend calls me to wish me a Happy 2007. Ummm... I haven't talked to him like in months. Glad to know Jeff always thinks ahead. Like the guy in LOST. I don't know how this relates to anything but I just drank coffee if that helps answer any questions.

Poor Eamon! I am glad that sharks didn't get a chance to eat him. Such a story teller. I might have to come around and write those stories down.
