Do you think I can get a Senior's Discount?
It came in the mail today. A shiny new plastic membership card to the AARP (The American Association of Retired Persons). I've been getting stuff from the AARP for years. Ever since I was 25, in fact. The only reason I can think of for this is that when I purchased my AAA membership, the clerk handling the transaction made a mistake and entered my birth year (1973) as the year my membership in AAA began. I guess my name and the date went into some marketing database, and the AARP figured I must be 50 + years old.

This is the first time I've received a membership card though. Do you think they could be opening their doors to people who are nearly (cough) 35?
When checking out the AARP website, I noticed some interesting articles, including one on "Music for Grown-ups" (apparently, Paul Simon is the mature choice), and the "Ins and Outs of International Adoption." This one surprised me. For some reason, I thought international adoption wasn't really open to people over the age of 50, but I guess I was wrong. Maybe these couples are adopting older children?
Anyway, I don't think I'll be returning my membership form with the required $12.50 annual fee. I'll give myself another 15 years of life experience (OMG! Am I going to be a senior citizen in just 15 YEARS???!!!) before joining. Although, it looks like their members do get some pretty good discounts.... Maybe it might be worth joining after all....

Funny. My nephew actually received a membership card when he was 14. (He was collecting social security payments because his father died.)
The AARP website is pretty good, isn't it? (Say yes.) I wrote quite a bit of content for their health and wellness section. :-)
HAHAHA!! That is hilarious. And I can laugh because I am older than you are and will actually BE in AARP before you.
You *can* get some sweet discounts with AARP though...so I hear.
Also, you are the most youthful AARP member I have ever seen.
Too bad you can't actually use that card they sent you. I would totally use it at the movies or wherever you might get a discount and then when they look at you funny, just shrug it off.
Don't knock AARP! We oldsters get lots of discounts. But, as I told you, if you get a social security check before I do I'm REALLY going to be annoyed.
That's funny!
This is hilarious - Kirk has been getting AARP stuff for years! He keeps accusing my mom of signing him up as a prank. Sounds like they need to do a better screening job of their potential members. :)
I have avoided joining AARP (so far) but my husband gets their mail...and through that I found that they were doing an article on older couples adopting. I thought that was just wonderful! That's probably why they have the link.
I got one, too. I wasn't too happy either. Dude! I know I have been sick lately, but getting this was bad. Have you got lots of life insurance forms in the mail lately?
I have no idea why, but I get the AARP stuff too. So bizarre. Now I wonder what would happen if we actually sent in for a card?
Oh, and I love the little flip flop you have at the end of each post. How'd you do that?
That is too funny.
Their mistake...your advantage. Use it! Besides, it'll be like the opposite of getting carded. Every time you try to use it, people will tell you how you couldn't possibly be an AARP member and demand your real age. ;>
