I just don't get it

I usually try to steer away from politics on this blog, but the election this week has left me perplexed. I'm referring to how California could pass a proposition protecting the rights of livestock (Prop 2 ), while at the same time taking away the rights of actual human beings. I've tried to understand the other side, really I have. But I simply cannot understand what people find so threatening about gay marriage.

A while back, I saw an article in People Magazine about the gay marriages taking place in California. In that article was the picture of a family I knew, the Franks. They are two women who have been together for nearly 20 years and have 3 daughters. It is actually through their daughters that I met this family - the two oldest girls were "munchkins" in a production of "Wizard of Oz," and I was a "Munchkin Wrangler" (backstage speak for "babysitter of child actors"). The moms were both very proud of their girls, extremely supportive, and it was obvious that the children were well-loved and happy. So, when I saw the family in People, I was thrilled to see that they were made "official" in the eyes of the law. Here is the picture of the Franks, all in pink in the bottom right of this page. Now, it appears that's all been taken away. And I have a hard time understanding why. How does the marriage of these two moms make my marriage to Jeff any less binding? And to those who say marriage is about procreation, I ask you to consider this. Due to infertility, my husband and I were not able to procreate. Does this make our marriage any less valid?

I just don't get it.

I don't get it either Jenni! It seems as if we are going backwards! 40 years ago people of different race couldn't marry each other, over 80 years ago women couldn't vote...have we not learned that everyone deserves equal rights? We live in a country that is supposed to have a separation of church and state. It gives us the right to practice or not practice any religion/beliefs that we want. So why is it then that others are pushing their religious beliefs on others in our CONSTITUTION?! My best friend was gay and he was the most generous and kind person I knew. The year he passed away from a seizure, he had been working for hospice giving terminally ill patients his time and care. I am going to keep fighting for Jon and my other gay/lesbian friends' rights. Equality is so much better to teach than hate and intolerance!

It's one of those things like racism, or any other form of bigotry. There is simply no sense to it, it's all based on fear. Fear of what, is anyone's guess. A gay couple's marriage has absolutely no impact on my life, but a huge positive impact on theirs. My hope is that in the near future people will look back on this the way most of look back on separate bathrooms and water fountains. Sort of a "WTF were they thinking??"

I don't get it either. I'll never understand why some people are so threatened by it. So they believe that God feels homosexual relationships are wrong -- fine. Believe that, but keep your mouth shut. Let God be the judge. Personally, I don't believe in a God that would deny people the right to love someone else.

My state passed a constitution change about this several years ago. It amazed me how easily people took to changing the constitution.

    It is rather surprising.

Liz and I have been struggling against this decision that the "People" have made also! I just can't grasp this stupidity either.
Her principal started an email thread that worked all the way up to the district office. I think he got his hand slapped! :) In a meeting he stated that marriage was about procreation and Liz almost blew up. I think she should have said something but she didn't.
Hopefully the courts will decide that this is just too darn stupid and overturn it. Time will tell!

I agree with you, Jenni. I don'tunderstand it either which I iwll be on the same boat as yours. I herad so many of my students saying awful things about Prop 8. I had to shut them up. I didn't care if I got fired or not. I had to be put them straight. The world is a strange place.

It's sad and honestly, a bit shocking. I didn't expect California to pass such a thing.
