She's no Taylor Swift
Recently, Vika has become an ardent fan of Taylor Swift. She printed out the lyrics to "Love Story" and practiced incessantly until she had all the words memorized. Kind of. She says "Julia" instead of "Juliette" ("Romeo and Julia" doesn't have quite the same ring...). Because the girl was singing the song ALL THE TIME (at the dinner table, in the shower, while watching T.V.), it quickly moved from being "cute" to being "so-irritating-I-can't-stand-it", prompting us to make our house a "No 'Love Story' Zone."
The fact that Vika is completely tone-deaf didn't help.
When she sings, the words "painful" and "Oh God, please stop" come to mind. But, not being the type of parents to squelch our child's dreams, Jeff and I have been doing what we can to encourage Vika to sing a bit better. And let me tell you, it's not easy doing this without being critical of her voice. So, Jeff got some singing software for his computer and worked with Vika for over an hour, trying to get her to hold a proper note. At dinner, Jeff mentioned how great Vika did and how she held a G note! Vix beamed and nodded in agreement. Genuinely excited for her, I offered praise for her hard work. However, after the kids were asleep, Jeff said he may have exaggerated Vika's vocal improvement. With eyebrows raised and a pained look on his face, he essentially said that Vika could not carry a tune in a bucket.
I think we might be better off encouraging Vika to pursue ballet. It's just quieter.

Ooh, we are going to the Taylor Swift concert in 2 wks. (Kristen and I). I'll laugh and think of you when I hear Love Story!
Oy, I hear ya. Mine loves to sing on the top of his lungs too - or should I say yell, because the word "sing" doesn't come remotely close. And it's not helped by the fact that his grandparents bought him one of those amplifying microphones. I'm thinking piano lessons...hell drum lessons would be less painful!
An amplifying microphone - what a great idea!! I mean, Christmas IS just around the corner...
So, what you're saying is that Jeff is Kanye West? Brutal! Seriously, you two are THE best parents ever! Way more patient than I ever was or will be.
Ha! That exactly describes my Anastasia! Oh, my gosh! How could a child who loves to sing so much end up unable to do so? We have a choir director at church who swears that nearly EVERY child can sing. She invites them ALL to the choir, and through her many years said she has only run into a couple of children who she could not help to sing beautifully. You guessed it. She sat down confidently with Anastasia at the piano one afternoon and that was the last she ever said about wanting Anastasia to join the choir. Miley is the favorite here, though.
I guess singing lessons are out of the question? wait until 4th grade and the recorder comes home. good times
That is funny!
