Um..Yeah... That's my husband....
After we've put the kids to bed, Jeff and I like to watch the Discovery Network. Yes, we're kind of wild like that. Anyway, I've always been a fan of Survivor, and while Jeff hates that show, he does enjoy "real" survival shows, like Survivorman. Last night, as we were watching Man Vs. Wild, Jeff decided that it was imperative that he learn how to make a fire from scratch. "You never know" he says, "we might get stranded in the wild someday."
Be prepared. That's his motto. (see this post for a reminder)
So now, he is outside, using an old shoelace and a stick to try to make fire. No matches, lighters or flint for him (even though I did buy him a flint last year for Christmas - this survival in the wildernes thing has been weighing on him for some time now). Nope, he's going to try it the old fashioned way - with only the resources around him.
I expect he'll be out there for most of the day. Will he make fire? Who knows. Will he come in later this afternoon, with cuts and blisters on his hands? Probably. He's such a man.
***UPDATE: After 3 hours of trying, a sliced thumb, and lots of smoke, but no fire, Jeff has decided to try using the flint. I give him credit for his dedication. Lucky for us, I always carry matches in my purse (I also like to be prepared).
**** UPDATE #2: 30 minutes with the flint, and we have success!

How funny. Give me matches or a lighter any day!
I've never seen that Survivorman show, but there's another show on (I forget what it's called) that puts this guy in all these perilous situations... it's a bit wild until you remember that a camera crew made their way there, too. Not so impressive, then.
I love this because M is a TOTAL prepardness guy. He has purchased so many flash lights that don't require batteries and other "emergency" gadgets that we will probably never use, but who knows, maybe someday we will be grateful for such husbands.
Congrats on the fire!
My idea of being prepared is to never actually GO into the wilderness!
What dedication!! My dh is totally the opposite. He's the "Aw, we'll deal with it when the problem arises." I am an organizer and it drives me nuts! It is good to be prepared.
This sounds like a man who has both editions of The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook...and has them highlighted. ;> I love it! I actually tend to think I need this skill, too...
Well at least you now know how long it will take should the matter ever arise....right?
:)
Good on you for your patience tho, hehe
Maggie - while watching the "Man vs. Wild" show, Jeff kept snorting in disgust because the guy had a whole camera crew with him. Survivorman,on the other hand, goes out there alone and films himself, which Jeff finds much more admirable. :)
At least now I know he can make fire, should the need arise. I just have to make sure he always carries that flint with him, or we could very well be doomed!
Dude!
I hope he doesn't start eating live snakes and grubs. My husband is addicted to that show - what is it with men??
lol oh it's good to be back to your blog!!!
