SPF: Things only a mother could love
This week, she whose pants never touch the bathroom floor wanted us to capture the ugliest creation that was made just for us. As a teacher and a mom, a lot of crayon drawings from kids come my way. I've been fortunate in that none have been terribly bad. When Vika and Eamon make something especially "interesting," I usually encourage them to give it to my mom or Vika's teacher. However, when Vika was 4, she went through a paper cutting and gluing phase. She would write letters and squiggles on random pieces of paper, glue them onto a larger scrap of paper and call it art. Then she proceeded to tape these little masterpieces all over the house. Here are two that she hung in the bedroom.

Recently, she looked at them and said, "Oh Mama, those aren't good. You can take them down now." But I've kind of gotten used to seeing them there. So up they stay. For now.
Here is Eamon's artistic creation. It's supposed to me a portrait of me. In a Leprechaun hat (from Eamon's leprechaun phase). The letters above either spell "Mama" or "Eamon," depending upon when you ask him what they say. I guess I shouldn't complain though. This drawing is much better than the glob of squiggly lines he put together as a portrait of his "Russian Mama."

I expect that as my kids go through school, my collection of art that only a mother could love will grow bigger. In fact, if I don't get a macaroni necklace somewhere down the line, I'm going to be disappointed!
Happy SPF! Did you play?

Bonnie does the same thing. She hangs her masterpieces on her door. Then, as she gets better masterpieces, she replaces them. She gives the old ones to me for safekeeping.
Girl...I once saw a manilla square of paper TAPED (albeit with Scotch tape and not the packing tape Vika used) to a black sheet of construction paper...framed...get ready for this...IN THE HOUSTON ART MUSEUM. Yes, I kid you not. ART they called it!
I'd try to eBay those suckers and see what you can get!
Too cute. Must be a 4-year-old thing. That is what mine is doing right now. She asks for stuff to cut and glue all the time ... maybe it is the pre-K curriculum or something!
Good one. Thanks for stopping by mine.
They're beautiful. Number One daughter did a very similar thing, but number two is filling her room with her animal 'sculptures'. I think I prefer pictures on the wall - Lula's room is so full that I can't reach her bed!
I played too. Have a lovely weekend!
TKW - your ebay idea intrigues me.... The piece of "art" you mentioned reminds me of some of the crazy stuff I saw at an art museum in Germany. Makes you wonder who's on the committee that selects works to hang in the museum.
:) Those are both great. And my niece is going through that cutting/gluing random pieces of paper stage right now.
Thanks for stopping by!
Those are great. I love the torn up picture things.
Happy SPF! Thanks for stopping by!
You hang them in your room too!!! I have all kinds of 'art' pictures hanging in my room. My kids love being the kid with the 'newest' creation.
I kept mounds of art work, notes, school papers, etc. when my kids were growing up. Then, when they were in their early 20's, I created a scrapbook for each of them with the more memorable items - along with pictures of them at various ages. It was great fun to do and they still have them so they must have liked them!
Oh, by the way, Jenni - you and I need to discuss the comment about the more "interesting" things being given to your mom!!!!
oh those are so cute, and the story as well!
I was so excited when Jaykeb finally started making "art" for me. I started a box and I already need a new one because the first is full!
Jayke's first drawing of us all looked a lot like Eamon's.
See, those are beautiful!
i think they are cute!
will they make me something?
i am lame and don't have any thing from b or b : ( also decided to skip this week's SPF since i wasn't about to show my ass (again!)
They are very cute. I love the picture of you! Thanks for stopping by!
HA! I have one of my nephew when he did a family portrait in the 3rd grade. I just happend to be in it and I loved it soooooooo much that I framed in placed it in my hallway of my house. He is now in the 10th grade. And Boy! Do I cherish that picture now more than ever.
Those are so cute! I have so many things my kids have made me over the years. It's insane! Every so often I go through and toss stuff and save the really important...I'm going to need a storage room soon for all of it ;-)
