Sound Effects
Don't you love it when kids try to pull a fast one on you? Their tiny little brains think they are so smart, and they have no idea that we see right through them. Eamon's arrived at a place where he is flexing his mischief muscles in new and interesting ways.
The other day, I asked Eamon to go wash his hands before dinner. After a bit of protest, he went into the bathroom and closed the door. First red flag - he never closes the door unless he's trying to hide something. So, Jeff and I listened a little closer, and we heard our son exhale a long, drawn out "Sssshhhhhhhhhh." He was trying to imitate the sound of water running, so he could pretend he was washing his hands! Soon after, the boy came out with a little self-satisfied smile on his face, pleased with his own brilliance. I looked at him and said, "Nicely done Eamon. Now go back in and really wash your hands." That wiped the smug smile off his face, and caused him to give a frustrated little foot stomp for good measure. But he did finally wash his hands.
Last night, Eamon tried out his sound effects again. He's been getting up a lot at bed time, and sneaking down to where Jeff and I are knitting or watching TV. Generally we hear him pretty quickly, but he's improving his powers of stealth, and sometimes manages to get right up to us before we notice him (the first time he did this, I about jumped out of my skin, I was so startled to see him standing there). Last night, after being caught creeping down the stairs and told, "Bedtime Eamon," he slowly walked up a few steps, waited a moment, and then quietly said, "Click!" This was supposed to be the sound of his bedroom door shutting.
Dang kid.
Mental note - never let Eamon see any of the "Police Academy" movies. The crazy sound guy might inspire him to try out new and more complex impressions.

Boys. I often holler up the stairs and tell Slugger to stop doing this or that. His frequent response is "How did you know?"
You guys are going to really have to be on your toes when he's a teenager! That kid is too funny.
hey maybe he has a future career as a sound effects/voice over person.
While my kids didn't resort to sound effects, one of my favorite memories was the afternoon phone call when they got home from school. They weren't supposed to have any other kids in the house. So, Jenni would call me at work all sweetness and light, and I would hear her brother, Joe, in the background saying, "Quiet, guys, my mom's on the phone!!" Yeah, they really put one over on me.
How funny! I think this is one of those boy / girl differences. Ben thinks he's sly too when he climbs out of bed at night. As long as I'm awake I can tell when he's out of bed - it's when I'm sleeping he makes me nervous.
I thought Police Academy also when I read this. He is too funny.
heh heh...he's good
Very funny. Thanks for the Police Academy reminder. Someday, I want to go rent it for my older kids.
Auntie Cathy says that Eamon should at least turn the faucet ON, get the sink wet, and even sprinkle some water on the soap.
Much more convincing!
