Fundamentally Irresponsible
Anyone who watches The Daily Show on a regular basis knows that Fareed Zakaria RULES. This guy knows his stuff. I like the way he often cuts to the chase, stating issues clearly, without the sensationalism or spin you see many journalists and pundits using to get their points across.
Today, Zakaria talked to Wolf Blitzer about his view of Sarah Palin. I'd say he hit the nail right on the head with this one. What do you think?

the job of a vp goes way beyond compaigning and collecting votes and if mccain really put country firt as his slogan says it,he will reconsider his choice.
So well put. "It's not that she didn't know the answer... it's that she clearly didn't understand the question." Perfect.
I hope she doesn't drop out, though. If McCain gets a stronger running mate, then he has a much better chance of being elected. And that scares me.
Oh puleeese.
Zakaria who ? Is this guy 12 years old.
If Mr. Zakaria would apply a simple timeline to his example (to maybe reflect some credibility in his opinion) he would note that at the time of the Couric interview the details and impact of the bailout were unknown. Yet he expects some kind of lucid informed response to this dumb question. Palin should have just ignored half of Couric's questions. Why did she even bother to sit for an interview with that "empty head" with an obvious agenda.
Why doesn't anyone note that when asked for an example of McCain's leadership, Palin gave a very strong example....Couric's response ?....."give me another example". Palin's mistake ? Trying too hard to be respectful to a reporter who does not deserve respect.
I'm not a big fan of Palin (although she seems impressive) cause I don't know too much about her (thanks in part to the "league of Zakariah" peddling misinformation and blatantly biased reporting).
How can anyone figure out this election or the right answer to the issues of the day when the people in control of the press are so polarized. Whatever happened to reporting "the news" so that the citizenry can make up their own mind.
Who is zakaria? Is this guy even American? Why are we considering his opinion?
Zakaria is trying to get his 15 minutes of fame!
This guy forgot to mention that Biden mucked up and should be asked to step down. But wait, he is a MAN and he is allowed to say stupid things. But Palin has not leeway.
Zakaria is from a country where women are slaves and beaten. Zakaria does not believe that women should be in power.
This will matter nought to any Palin supporters, but I will mention it anyway.
Australia had a narrow-minded, racist politician who headed the 'One nation' party in the late 90's. At the time her small but loyal following was a national embarrassment. She shared many similarities with Palin (views, qualifications, popularity with 'grass roots' Australians).
The difference between Palin and Hanson, is that at least Pauline Hanson was INTELLIGENT and ARTICULTE. She understood the issues, and while she had some radical views, at least she was capable of arguing her case.
Palin is an unintelligent redneck. How can she be a candidate for a role that is 'a heartbeat' from the most powerful job in the world ?????
Like Mr Zakaria, I am not an American, but I am concerned for the future should this election go the way of McCain/Palin.
Mccain said this morning that his stark contrast on the position of Pakistan with Palin is explainable: He said he largely agrees with Palin in the sense that “he would route out terrorism wherever it exists.” But, he doesn’t want to “broadcast” it to the nation or on TV in an open announcement, because there’s a difference between saying it, and having an intent to do it but keeping your intent from the mainstream American people. This is otherwise know as lying folks.
I question everything Mccain says now… is everything he says going to simply be a tactic to make people believe that he is going to do something when he gets into office for fear of saying or annoucing something that they might not want to hear now for fear of putting his campaign at risk? Mccain is a liar, cheat, and thief to the American people. He used us and our futures as a chip in his bargaining tactic on this fabricated bail-out issue. I voted Obama yesterday, and have never been more proud in my life to vote.
I absolutely agree with him and you. Political preferences aside, McCain's choice was irresponsible. I would have a lot more respect for him and his party if they admitted the mistake and replaced her with another candidate.
Zakaria?
Another Middle Eastern "know it all" who can contribute to CNN's "spin"?
Fade away FZ, this is America - and one of the few places people like you are allowed to speak their mind not only at street bazaars!
Just a reference to who is Fareed Zakaria and the ignorant people who posted comments out here.
1. Fareed Zakaria was born in India in 1964
2. He is a naturalized Citizen of the United States of America, and knowing how seriously Naturalized citizens take their citizenship compared to those who are born here, I think there is little doubt of his sincerity in what he says.
You may not agree with his views, and everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
Get educated people, before you put your two cents worth.
Wow. There are quite a lot of anonymous opinions on this subject, I see.
It's interesting to hear you all debate this issue. However, I do take exception to the statement that because Zakaria is of Middle Eastern descent that his opinion is somehow invalid. It is those types of ethnocentric ideas that have led to the conflict in the Middle East (on all sides, not just ours).
The point he made that I agreed with so much was that McCain did not put America first (like his slogan says) when he picked Palin. There are other Republican politicians, both male and female, who would have been a better choice.
Mr. (or Ms) Anonymous is smart to stay unknown. Obviously even he(she) realizes the lack of knowledge in his(her) comments. People with valid points aren't afraid to use their names. Assuming that anyone of middle eastern descent is automatically suspect is totally non-American. And, as you said, much of the reason we are in the mess we are now in.
Every naturalized citizen of the US should shut up and have no opinion of their own. This is America and only naturally-born americans have the right to speak up in this country.
So Mr Zakaria, it does not matter that you were born in India (and not the middle east as everyone assumes). It does not matter that you are a US citizen - you were not here and hence should keep your opinions to yourself.
It doesn't matter that you were the editor of Newsweek and the anchor of numerous TV shows on politics and world affairs - you are not an expert on Alaska and therefore should not comment on Gov Palin.
It also does not matter that you were voted "one of the 21 most important people of the 21st Century", what matters is that you are not in touch with the common people. You are an elite, because you can speak a sentence without making any grammatical errors (like "It's not that she didn't know the answer... it's that she clearly didn't understand the question.". And therefore we the American people ask you a middle-eastern, foreigner, elite to please keep your opinions to yourself.
We voted an "average" guy like Gov Bush to be our President and have done exceedingly well in the last 8 years, thank you very much. We are very confident that we will do the same with a guy who fought for us in Vietnam (all other US veterans are just faking it or are too lazy to stand for President) and a special lady from Alaska who makes it so easy on our eyes when she is clueless about what is being asked of her. We deserve such exceptional leaders and not the elites who can think rationally and with a degree of foresight.
Very intersting.
Bobby M - I nearly fell out of my chair after reading your first sentence! Thank goodness I read the rest of your comment before over-reacting.
It is very interesting how some people are willing to completely discount Zakaria's opinion because he doesn't fit their image of what an "American" should be.
LOL - same reaction to Bobby M!
McCain smugly boasts of his superior judgment over Obama. And yet he, of such sound judgement, chose this backwards-thinking, vindictive, clueless woman as his Presidential running mate???
Methinks there may have been a little crush involved, in addition to the obviously condescending belief that women will vote for ANY woman, simply because they supported Hillary.
Excellent judgment there, John. Good sign of things to come.
Jenni and Susan - sorry to make you skip a heart beat or two. But it was quiet clear to me that sarcasm was the only way to respond to those who clearly don't understand the issues in front of us and would rather resort to shoot the messenger.
I have resigned to the fact that McCain/Palin will win in November. I live in CA and no matter how much I fret and fume about this, I can't make any difference here. We deserve to be governed by sub-standard leaders. Look at our education system for example - the idea is to dumb down the academics to the lowest common denominator so that more students pass to the next grade. We have become a nation of low-achievers - no "proud" low achievers. And this effect is spilling over to our governance system as well.
Gov Palin proudly says that she has no Washington-experience. I think that should send alarm bells everywhere. How does she expect to work within the washington system of governance and fix it as she claims if she clearly doesn't understand how it runs in the first place. A reform can only come from within. I love to dabble in finances and the stock market, but that clearly does not qualify me to be a hedge fund manager in the wall street!
I saw that clip and agree. I have always respected his opinion and comments!
Wish those anonymous poster would grow a few and show who they are.
Jenni-you are right on, decent, color, background or heritage makes no difference.
While I am democrat and generally vote that way, I have always respected McCain for his service to this country. I felt his choice was both irresponsible and a bit insulting, did he really think he could wrap it up by just choosing a woman? Does he think women are not smart enough or so bitter over Hilary that they would only vote by gender. That is how I felt after his pick.
She does frighten me, but frankly I just can't imagine given how much this country has gone to shit in the last 8 years that the same party would be voted back in office?
Anything is possible though.
Ok, lets all chip in and get him a Life Alert
I agree with Maggie re not understanding the question.
I think the whole of the UK (and the world outside the US) is in absolute fear about the upcoming election, obviously many Americans too, I just wonder if enough Americans are scared though...
I have a great deal of respect for Fareed Zakaria and how on earth can someone say becuase of his country of origin he would object to women being in power???!!! Do people really think like this??
I wonder why people chose to be anonymous simply because they are expressing their views?
Thanks for posting the video!
