Rite of Passage?

I guess it's something that every parent goes through sooner or later. Just when you think your child is looking pretty good, they grab the scissors and give themselves a haircut. I had a minor experience with this early on when Vika trimmed a lock of her hair. But fortunately, it was a small lock, and was kind of off to the side of her face, so it wasn't terribly noticeable.

With Eamon, I wasn't so lucky. Jeff was going to drop him off at my classroom yesterday after school, so he called to prepare me: "Jenni, Eamon cut his hair." Oh no. He'd finally gotten to the point where he had this cute, shaggy kind of "skater boy" hair, and I wondered how bad the damage was. When Eames first walked into my classroom, it didn't look so bad. He had his bangs kind of swept over to the side, and I thought maybe it would be OK. But as he began playing and his hair started to move back to it's normal resting place, the haircut was painfully apparent.**

Obviously, I had to give him a trim to help these new bangs blend in. But, if I gave him a cut as short as his bangs, I was afraid he might look like Mo from the "Three Stooges." In the end, I decided on a compromise. I cut his hair shorter, but not as short as the area Eamon cut himself. I figured that yes, he may look like a dork, but it's fitting punishment for him cutting his hair.

** I don't know what is with the dorky smiles in these pictures - I guess it's the best I could expect given the circumstances.

I purposely waited to look at the picture until I was done reading your description-it was worth the wait! I'm still giggling!

You did a nice job "fixing" it though!

Good fix job! Your brother had the "tooth missing" look in his bangs for several months while his personalized haircut fixed itself. It's definitely a rite of passage. Keep the photos in your "future blackmail" folder (I'm assuming you have one!!)

    Wow. He went for broke!

You could always just give him a little boy buzz cut. I think you did a good patch job though!

Oh no. His hair was so cute.

Story for you. When I was little my sister was babysitting the kids who lived across the street. The oldest girl was my age (and my best friend) so I always went too. The girl (Becca) and I were upstairs while my sister was downstairs with the baby. We got quiet, so my sister called to check on us. I came downstairs saying "She made me do it!" And Becca, with her gorgeous, thick, waist-length blonde hair, came downstairs. All looked fine from the front, but in the back, there was a two or three inch section jaggedly cut to the nape of her neck. Becca's mother still gives me heck about that. But I stand by my original statement -- she made me do it!

Definitely a rite of passage, albeit not one I'm looking forward to! When I was about 8 or 9, my brother cut my hair for me. My mother practically rushed me to the salon in an ambulance. My friend's 5 y.o. cut her own bangs...twice. Yikes.

Nice work on the 'blending', though!

My brother used to do exactly this every.time. he wanted a haircut and my mom didn't schedule it fast enough. His cut of choice was a buzz so this was the most effective way to get his appointment scheduled.

I think you came up with a good fix!

This may be a rite of passage, but, my rite of passage was quite delayed. I was in about 6th grade and my below the shoulder length hair was bugging me. It was always so tangly underneath my hair at my neckline. So, in my infinite wisdom, I cut out the tangles and created a lovely fringe of one inch long bangs hiding underneath my hair. Growing up in the sweltering South, almost dictates you sweep your long hair off your neck for heat relief. Not me! I couldn't bear to be seen looking like a dorkus for several years afterwards. I avoid scissors.
Eamon, you look handsome! Mom to the rescue!

LOL oh I think it's so funny, I admit I thought only 2 or 3 year olds did it, until I caught one of mine in the act (age 6!) but thankfully caught him in time!

I think the new cut looks great; is there a change in your career in the future?!
    HA

  9. Yep, definitely a rite of passage. Alina actually took matters to a new level - she went scissors-happy. I think she was 4 or 5 at the time. She cut her hair (a lot more thoroughly than Eamon did), then cut a hole in several pillows, cut teddy bear's nose off, and, in the final blow, cut a hole in my favorite blanket. I was pissed! And amazed that she accomplished it all with child-safety scissors...

Oh no! Heck, I had bangs like that a couple of years ago (well maybe not quite that short, but it sure seemed like it) and I PAID someone to do that. Maybe Eamon has a future as a barber.

ugh, the dreaded cutting of the hair. Olivia has done it but only a little and not too noticeable.
