Doughnut? What's a Doughnut?
This is the question that Vika surprised me with when I was "tasting" her play food doughnut and exclaiming over how good it was. She and Eamon had thought it was a cookie. When I said, "No, that's not a cookie. It's a dounghnut!", I was met with blank stares from both of them. How could I have failed my children on something so basic? Granted, we don't eat doughnuts that much, but they are an American institution! Kind of like apple pie. As memories began floating through my head of childhood road trips, the first stop of which was always at Dunkin' Donuts for an early breakfast, I made a decision. The kids and I were going to Krispy Kreme! Jeff was supposed to be heading off to work, but when he heard our destination, he decided to join us instead (he's a real estate broker with a very flexible schedule).
Vika and Eamon were so excited about going to the doughnut shop that you would have thought it was Disneyland! They went running up to the doors, kind of dancing around, waiting for us to catch up. Inside, they were amazed by the sight of doughnuts being fried and glazed in an assembly line and stood by the windows watching the process for quite a while.

They were so entranced by the view that they didn't even notice when I put Krispy Kreme hats on their heads. Finally, they hurried over to the counter to place their order. After buying a dozen doughnuts, we found a place to sit and each ate an original glazed doughnut. Vika and Eamon were in Heaven!

It was a fun "educational visit" for the kids and a nice break for us. I look forward to the day when we will begin our own family road trips with a visit to the doughnut shop for breakfast.
