First Week Down!
I've survived my first week teaching 6th grade. I actually like it a lot, and have a really great group of kids to work with this year. In my class are all the "cool kids" - the skater boys and the sporty girls. It's kind of funny to get to know them, because even though they think they are the bomb, they are really all just big dorks. I'm already thinking of all kinds of fun ways I can mess with them. ;) That is one of the joys of being a teacher, after all (in addition to all that rewarding "molding of young minds" stuff).
Vika's first week of 1st grade has gone OK too, but I do have some concerns. Her teacher has shown them a video every. single. day. On Friday, she showed them TWO videos! Naturally, Vika thinks this is the best thing in the world, but as a parent and a teacher, I'm not diggin' it so much. Especially since Vika is still an English Language Learner, and can really benefit from some direct instruction. It appears that I may have to become one of those "squeaky wheel" parents. Not fun. Hopefully things will turn around next week, and I won't have to bring up my concerns to the teacher.
I knew I would be busy once school started, but I never dreamed I would be this busy! I hardly have time to get around and read all your blogs. I'm hoping to catch up a bit this weekend. If I haven't commented recently, it's not because I don't like you anymore. I'm just inundated with school work and have been falling into an exhausted stupor each evening. Hopefully, once I get into a groove, I'll have a bit more free time on my hands.

I remember all the things your brother and his friends did to their teachers in elementary school. Hope none of your students are like that!
Sounds like things are going well...I know what you mean about those videos. Surely, there's something better they can be doing with that time!

I would love to hear about how you deal with work & kids. I'm getting nervous about having to deal with everything. I may take a year or two off ... we'll see what our girls need.

I'm so glad your first week went well, and don't be afraid to be the squeaky wheel! My son just started 1st grade also, and they have yet to do anything except school work!
Videos every day of the first week of school, how appalling!! Hopefully this is not an indication of what you can expect from this teacher throughout the rest of the school year. I would definitely be the squeaky wheel! And since you are a teacher, all the better!
Glad you survived the first week. Hopefully, Vika's teacher was just "settling in" and things will even out this week.

i have shown one 25 minute bill nye video on the water cycle to my second graders in three weeks. we're not due another one for about a month...
I've been thinking about you and hoping it went well. I am so glad that it's going OK although I am sure very tough transitions!
