The Joy of Sex Ed

What does it say about my maturity level that I was completely mortified to preview the 6th grade Family Life videos, "Boy to Man" and "Girl to Woman" with my students' parents tonight? Truly, if I think of my boys and girls in those terms, I may lose my mind. Thank God I'm not viewing the video with my male students! I'll leave that fun to the P.E. teacher, thankyouverymuch.

(what kind of hits will this title bring to my blog, I wonder?)

    Haha. Have fun with that!

I bought the American Girl book for my 11 year old. She was reading it and came running out to me exclaiming, "YOU BLEED?! WHAT?!" I couldn't believe she didn't know that! I thought for SURE I'd told her that part, I've always been very open with her about that stuff. "Don't you talk about this stuff with your friends?" I asked. Apparently, she doesn't.

Good thing we have teachers like you to fill in the gaps!

    Um, it says you're normal....

Oh, yet another reason the general public and I are both glad I'm not a teacher.

Yeah. So glad I'm teaching second graders. As far as we're concerned sex is whether you're a boy or a girl.

I have had 2nd and third graders in my class with their periods. The worst was my first year teaching 3rd grade and one of my girls got hers in the middle of the day. I really had an interesting talk with her at recess. Didn't think I would have to explain it to an 8 year old.
