What Women Want

Yesterday I went to a bridal shower for my dear friend, Catheroo. She's getting married to (e) towards the end of May, and I couldn't be happier for them both. Aside from the fact that he doesn't like trying new foods (what's up with that?!), (e) is a wonderful person - the first guy who I can say is truly deserving to share Cath's life with her.

Cath got a bunch of great gifts at her shower yesterday, but my favorite was a book that our friend Steph got for her called Porn for Women.* No, it's not what you think. In this book, there are pictures of hunky, well-dressed guys, saying things like, "You look stressed. Let me make you some tea so we can talk about it. Chamomile OK?" Or, "C'mon, sit down! There are ball games on all the time. But how often can we watch the figure skating finals?" It was so perfect that I went right out and bought it for my soon-to-be sister-in-law. Mom and I trained my brother pretty well when he was growing up, but since moving out, he's developed some bad habits. Maybe the book can be like a refresher course for him?

Anyway, as I was flipping through the book, I was amazed to see how many of the things mentioned actually fit Jeff. For example, he often makes me a cup of tea when I've had a stressful day. He also loves a clean house, and isn't much into watching football or baseball on TV. But the one that fits him best is this page: "I made some Niman Ranch lamb tenderloin with garlic, black pepper, and Indonesian soy sauce for dinner. I hope that sounds OK." As I've mentioned before, Jeff is the cook in our house, and he loves making new, gourmet foods. Seriously, he completely spoils me, and I'm well aware of how lucky I am.

A conversation at the breakfast table today perfectly illustrated this role-reversal in our house. The kids were talking about what it would be like if they all of a sudden became grown-ups.

Vika: I don't want to be a grown-up. I'm scared to cook, and I'm scared to drive!

Eamon:
I'm not scared to cook, because I'm gonna be a Papa, and Papas cook. Mamas don't cook. Only sometimes.

So glad to see we're raising Eamon right! Hopefully he'll make a wonderful husband someday (just like his Papa).

* I can't wait to see what kind of interesting Google searches this brings to my blog!

Tell Vika she doesn't need to know how to cook to be a grownup, just know how to order well. At least that's how I do it.

That book is too funny. BT is the cook in our house too. And grandma (who lives near us) is the Queen of reservations and take out. Can't wait to see what our boy grows up to think about traditional gender roles!

Jenni actually can cook, she chooses not to. So she was VERY fortunate to marry a gourmet cook! It's very funny that the kids see this as the norm! I'm babysitting this weekend, maybe we need to have a talk......

That's so cute, "mama's don't cook, only sometimes!"
Someone should have told me that growing up ;-)

Sooo, does Jeff have a single brother? ;> I've got to get that book for a friend of mine...and maybe another one for myself! I'm a little afraid to search for it on Amazon, though...

That's the first thing I thought of when I saw your post title. You'll have to post a list sometime.
